Variations on the News

Riding high on her bestseller, Dove knew she needed to capitalize on the momentum. Start the next book. She already had one half-written that she'd shelved for a while. It was a novella called Critical Mass. It would probably only take her a couple of weeks to finish it. Putting another book out that fast after a bestseller, even if it was only a novella, was always a smart move. The name recognition and popularity of Falling Rain would only last so long before another lesbian book du jour would take its place. She wanted it to be hers.

She pulled the draft up in Scrivener and started reading through it, doing simple edits, adding things here and there, changing diction. No real writing, but Dove was happy with her story and felt it would be well-received by her readers.

She wondered if Lissa knew about the book's rankings, yet. Dove reached for her phone and it rang in her hand. Lissa must be psychic. She answered, "So you heard?"

"Heard what?"

"Seriously? Are you just yanking my chain?"

"No. My chain-yanking is reserved for special occasions. What are you talking about?"

"My book."

"Falling Rain?"

"Yes."

"What?"

"It's a number one bestseller!"

"Fuck me runnin', are you serious?"

"Yes! I wouldn't joke about such things."

"Well I'm very proud of you!" A moment of silence, then, "Hang on…"

"What are you doing?"

"I'm downloading it."

Soon, their conversation moved to the work Dove had been doing, and she sent Lissa pictures while they talked. Lissa looked at them on her laptop as she continued to use the phone to talk to Dove. Lissa seemed thrilled with the renovations so far.

"So, that's the report, but you called me. What's up?"

"Oh. Um…I've got the bad news, the good news, and then the news that could go either way depending on how you feel about it."

Dove laughed. "Well, let's get the bad news out of the way first."

"Okay. I just lost my job."

"Oh no! What happened?"

"The Downsizing Cabal tapped me on the shoulder."

"I'm sorry, Lissa."

"No worries. The good news is, I just sold my grandfather's corn harvester combine to Cliff. So, heads up: we can do wonderful things to the house and not worry about what it costs."

"Oh yeah. He told me. He already picked it up, just today. So are you going to want to hire specialized professionals then?

"For what?"

"The renovations."

"Frankly, I'd rather have you do it all, if you still enjoy the work."

"I do. I really do. It's helping me get back in shape, and it makes me feel productive. It also gets me out of my desk chair on a regular basis."

"Awesome. Now, I wonder if you wouldn't mind some company?"

That caught her off-guard for a few beats. "You're coming to visit?"

"Well, more like, coming to enjoy a sabbatical. I'm thinking of taking a year to just relax and help you work on the house some, and do what I want. But if that's an issue, we can figure something else out."

"Oh…no…there seems no point in that. It's a big roomy house."

"Okay then.
